Visit the Aquarium:

http://maine.gov/dmr/rm/aquarium/index.html

Located at 194 McKown Point Road, West Boothbay

Telephone: 207-633-9559

Open May 25- September 21, 2008

Hendrick's Head Beach:

Located on Beach Road on Southport Island (follow Rt. 27 South, about 10 minutes from Boothbay Harbor), the Hendrick's Head beach is a great beach for playing, exploring and finding crabs. The water in Maine is cold, even in the summer, but most kids still love to swim in it! Stop at the Southport General Store on your way to the beach for great sandwiches, snacks and ice-cream!

 Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens:

www.mainegardens.org

A day well spent & always an adventure: throw you little ones in a backpack or stroller and let your toddlers and kids run free. There are many fun trails to choose from with waterfalls and fairy houses along the way. Our favorite itinerary- spend the morning hiking the trails and then have lunch at the cafe. We head home for naps that are always a bit longer after a day of running on trails.

Admission is $10 for adults. Children under 5 are free.

Go Fishing:

Sweet Action Charters

www.sweetactioncharters.com

With over 25 years of experience on the rivers of Maine, Captain Dan Wolotsky will lead you to his favorite spots in the Kennebec watershed, home of world class light tackle Striper fishing. Wildlife abound, as eagle, deer, seals, otter, and osprey are all commonly seen.  Families and kids are welcome; offering fishing trips as well as non-fishing excursions.

Take a Ride on the Train:

Visit the Boothbay Railway Village, http://www.railwayvillage.org/

Take a ride on a real steam engine train, meet "Thomas the Tank Engine" in July, visit the museum and pet the animals. We often take a picnic lunch and run around in their big field.

 Walk on the Footbridge:

A great activity while adults are shopping in town- the footbridge is located in downtown Boothbay Harbor next to the municipal parking lot. This is a favorite spot for our children to see the boats in the harbor and the fish swimming under the bridge. This is another great spot for ice-cream.

Visit the Library:

Both Boothbay Harbor and Southport have public libraries with great kids selections and story hours.

The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library is open most days from 10am- 4:30pm, closed on Sunday and Monday, 207-633-3112

The Southport Memorial Library is open Tuesdays and Thursday from 9-4pm and 7-9pm, and Saturdays from 9-4pm, 207-633-2741.

Visit the Farmers Market:

On Thursday mornings from 9am- 12 noon there is a wonderful farmers market located in the Boothbay Center, across from the Boothbay Town Office. Here, farms from all over midcoast Maine sell their goodies- fresh eggs, vegetables, meats, pies, breads, cheeses, the list is endless and delicious. The Boothbay Center is a large grass field with plenty of room for little ones to walk around or sit on the grass or picnic tables and enjoy a fresh snack.

Clifford Park Playground:

Less than a mile from the Farmers Market  is a large public playground with baby swings and big swings, plus two large play structures for climbing and sliding. It is located on Back River Road, the road behind the monument, to the right of the Town Office, if you are looking from the Farmers Market.

Restaurants

With so many restaurants to choose from, it is hard to know which ones your children will enjoy!

Our local favorites:

Kaler's Crab and Lobster House, Boothbay Harbor

207-633-5839

www.kalers.com

Always our first choice- Fantastic menu (the best lobster stew I have ever had!) with generous portions, a touch tank with various ocean critters, fast and friendly service right on the water overlooking the Harbor. Their entire menu is also offered for take-out.

Robinson's Wharf, Southport

207-633-3830

www.robinsonswharf.com

Fresh seafood, children's menu, picnic style dining on the docks & a great view of the boats passing through the swing bridge.

Andrews' Harborside, Boothbay Harbor

207-633-4074

www.andrewsharborside.com

Located at the footbridge, this is our favorite spot to have breakfast with the kids. You can't pass up the HUGE cinnamon buns- even the locals crave them!
